Our
center in Cajamarca,
it can now be said, is an unreserved success.
Thanks
to the creative toil of a great team of volunteers, we now have a stable
group of 45 to 52 poor children who come every day to receive our help,
including classes, a free meal and lots of love and services.
Half our children go to school in the morning and come to us in
the afternoon; the other half the reverse. This month we celebrated
our official dedication, with civic and religious figures in assistance,
and at the end of the month we bade farewell to Jean-Francois and Joannie,
our first coordinators, and witnessed the turnover of direction to Emma
and Cat (pictured here; Jean-Francois and Joannie: featured below).
Our mission is to get child laborers and street kids
off the street and into school.

This
month at Trujillo:
With
the departure of our leadership team to Cajamarca, we formed a new one,
under Antonio, Meghann and Tomoko.
So far they have
risen to the challenge, improving our control over the progress of the
children who we recently registered in school: visiting their homes and
monitoring their progress with the schools where they attend. Antonio
is increasing the number of social workers on his team, who have also redirected
the children's classes to better address the learning needs of incoming
street children, and helped improve the schedule of the Language
Academy for adults. Meghann has opened new markers for the products of
the mothers of Hachamama. For more information click

A
tribute to three special volunteers
Jean-Francois
and Joannie, from Quebec, Canada, are two young scientists who decided to
come help street children in Peru before going for their doctoral degrees.
They spent their four months partly in Trujillo, where they were on the
leadership team, and mostly in Cajamarca, where they served as our first
directors of the new project there.
They proved wonderful, dedicated and caring
administrators, getting the project off the ground and open within a few
weeks of their arrival. Motivating and shepherding their team of volunteers
they began to make contact with the street children of Cajamarca, organized
the kitchen and dining areas, classrooms, dorms for volunteers and contact
with professional and special services we would need for our children. They
also promoted, opened and taught in the evening language academy; which
is destined to make the project self sustaining. By their example of hard
work, creative ideas, good humor and team work they succeeded beyond our
expectations. Jean-Francois and Joannioe, we salute you.
Their success, we know, was also due to the great support they received
from the team of volunteers who gathered at Cajamarca: Georg, who made the
furniture and renovated the property to accommodate our mission: and he
also taught both children and adults. Cat, who pitched in with everything,
always good humored (usually singing), with her creativity and good teaching
both of children and adults. The social worker, Carla, the medic, Peter,
Secretary, Irma, Cook and her staff. And then came John (from England).
Scheduled to stay for 3 weeks he stretched it to 5. The consensus of everyone
who has worked with John is that he is the best, most creative and hardest
working educator of street children they have ever encountered. Bravo John! |

The
Angles of April
James finally left us the end
of April. After six months with us he went to the jungle of northern Peru
to learn the secrets of the Shaman. Before
going, however, he organized one last shipment of children's clothes, medicines
and a hair dryer. Thank you, James, for all you have done.
Diana came to us from Japan, laden with toys and educational material for
the children; and has now gone on to Cajamarca: where she is making a valuable
contribution to the new team there.
Three large crates followed Tomoko from Japan. They were full of the largest
collection of really good children's clothes, medical, dental, toys and
learning supplies that we have ever received from one volunteer. A huge
thank you to all of you.

Transitions
April we bade
farewell to some of our finest, longest serving volunteers so far. The
loss was well compensated by the arrival of a new group of exceptionally
dedicated and talented volunteers from all over the globe.
