Eight new orphans join Albergue Nicole D'Amecourt
Under an accord with the National Foundation for Children, Peru, we accepted 8 children who are too old for adoption (ages 13 - 17).
We are finding them well behaved and eager to learn. We have until they are 18 to prepare them for life on their own. We are already teaching them to manufacture decorative items for sale, as well as cooking, computers, English, music and civic skills.August 2002

Our Aqua Culture project
Thanks to Sra. Julia Larco Castro and Floyd Jones, Bruce Peru is about to begin raising fish to feed to our hungry children.

Tilapia is an African breed which grows rapidly in aquacultire. We will begin with 8,000 which hopefully will convert to 7 to 8 tons of fish by early next year. We expect this to provide fish three times a week to our 15 clubs, plus to sell enough to pay the next crop.

The day the earthquake
came to lunch

A mild earthquake visited four of our "restaurants" in early august.
By the end of the month we had new roofs on two and had almost completed repair work on the other two. No one was hurt.

Our new shop
We have tought a group of abandoned mothers to make a range of hand made products to sell in shops and to the tourist market. They have been working away and now have a large stock of items to sell. To help them market their products we have opened a small shop.

Latest exposition of tipical Peruvian cuisine.
In order to help the mothers who attended the cancer examination we also held a "Fiesta de Platas Tipicas" and lent them the ingredients so they could sell their cooking to pay the cost of transportation from the barrios to our campus in the center of town (most are so poor they would not otherwise have been able to come). Every plate was sold.

Transitions
Our friend and helpful IT volunteer Jose has taken a job in Mexico - we miss him. In compensation we have received some great new volunteers: Cristian, Jerusa, Veronica, Dora and Alexandro, Ruby.
