Getting
street kids and child laborers into school, NOW.
This
month we reaped the harvest of our work since January. The street children
and child laborers we have been pulling in from the streets week by week
- feeding, persuading of the value of an education, tutoring, medicating
and loving - have taken the leap. We enrolled them in classes, bought
their uniforms, books and supplies: and now they are attending school
half a day and coming to us for meals, tutoring and support. The hardest
part is done, yet, in a sense our work has just begun; for we will need
to help them stay in school, and for those who have a family (usually
a single mother), we will often need to help her find an alternative income
to replace what her children no longer bring in.

This month we opened our new Bruce Peru center to help child laborers
and street children in Cajamarca, northern Peru.
We
have opened our doors to the child laborers and street children of this
mountain community - our mission is to help them get off the streets and
into school.
We are all pleased
with the hard work of Joannie, Jean-Francois and Georg in opening this
new center, and also to all those who have come to help them: Carla and
Sandra (social workers), Irma (secretary and registrar of the language
academy), Antonio (our volunteer coordinator from Trujillo) and Peter
(specialist in child medicine). Let the games begin..

Our
unsung heroines.
Ana
Tere, our President for the past two years, usually runs things from the
background, directing our Peruvian volunteers, overseeing our relationship
with vendors, the community and the Government. Whenever we need to do something
in another part of the country, she usually knows someone there and manages
to open all the right doors - as in Cajamarca. Meghann, our longest serving
international volunteer (after Bruce), has quietly organized the Language
Academy so that it now offsets a good part of our operating cost. She is
also the coordinator of 'Hachamama'.,
our program for poor women.
When Ana Tere agreed to help Bruce "with
his street kids", it was on the understanding that Bruce would also
help her in her work for abused and abandoned animals (for she is either
cofounder, officer or director of most of the animal rescue leagues in these
parts). But she has been kept so busy dealing with our children's needs
these past three years that she has seldom found time to ask Bruce for help;
except every now and then on weekends. Meghann lived through a major reorganization,
when we decided to stop feeding all the poor children in town and concentrate
only on those who wanted to get an education - this decision discouraged
a number of our volunteers, but Meghann stuck with us: until the merit of
our change was born out in the good it is doing for the children. We salute
you, Ana Tere and Meghann. |

Volunteer
life at Bruce Peru,
March 2004. It
was a good month at Bruce Peru: we opened Cajamarca, got our current batch
of children into school and received some really positive volunteers. Emma
brought her organizational skills, Catherine, her contagious love of children
and equally contagious good nature, Berangere, fell in love and decided to take some of our volunteers away with her; Antonio, brings years in organizing and directing
social programs in his native Portugal to
his new post as our volunteer coordinator, Peter, his specialty in children's
medicine, treated our children both in Trujillo and Cajamarca; Tabby is
a constant companion to the children and always ready to shoulder the work
in feeding and teaching; Elco liked our language academy so much he decided
to take our course material, some of our teachers and students: and start
his own, Chantelle brought her professional fund raising experience to our
aid, and continues helping from afar; Lisa has brought her good teaching
and child minding skills from Sweden, Nina, her intelligent, warm, diligent
help on several projects, and Clif, his critical eye, good ideas and hard
work. |
