Volunteer life at Bruce Peru,
November 2003.
This month we served ever more street children, said a few goodbyes and hellos to departing and arriving volunteers, worked a lot, relaxed a bit
.
Some of us had more fun than others, all had fun some of the time - in fact everyone who came to work with street children got pleanty of time for that.

Medical day for the children of Delicias Beach.
In the same community where we are building our shelter for abandoned adolescent rape victims, Delicias Beach, seven kilometers south of Trujillo, we also conduct outreach programs to help the street children and poor mothers. In the past we have helped with childrens parties and given food to the mothers clubs. In November we added to this a free medical day for the children of Delicias. Our volunteers, Dr. Jackson (a Piaditrist), Sophie (an epidemologist), and Ana to translate, we occupied the local clinic and received a steady stream of children from 9:00 Am to 3:00 PM.

Scenes from our language academy.

A number of our international volunteers not only work with the street children and in their particular projects during the day, but also contribute their language skills in the evening, teaching Peruvians to speak English and French in exchange for a small small contribution to our work. This is a valuable contribution Bruce Peru as our work depends entirely on our own resources. Here are pictures of some of our volunteers teaching their Peruvian students..

Homage to a very special volunteer. Patrick arrived from Scotland in mid October with a commitment volunteer with us for 6 weeks. At 18, Patrick is spending a year away from his studies before going up to university, and he had little previous volunteer experience , had never been to a poor country - this is all we knew about him before he arrived. But Patrick turned out to be someone who is comfortable in any environment (even our accommodations can be a bit of a shock to someone coming from adeveloped country). He posesses a nutural love for children: someone to whom they instantly gravitate: in no time he was surrounded by them, knew all their names and with his servicible Spanish could communicate and help them. Always positive, friendly, good humoured; you could ask him to do anything that would benefit the children, however difficult and he would throw himself into it with vigor. Before he left Patrick knew the full names and ages of perhaps 200 children. And on his last day he had gifts for most of them. We have had and still have lots of wonderful volunteers, but Patrick, for his relationship with the children, stands out as someone truly special. Thank you for coming, Pat.

The Angels of November:
This month we had some new donors and some old one who just kept on giving; For instance the School of Psychiatry at UPAO University turned up with several large bags of staples for the children's comedor and the ingredients to throw a small surprise party for the children - thank you so much - and Patrick bid farewell to the children with a yoyo for each, but Meghann and Tanya, who had already brought gifts when they arrived, continued to buy medicined for the children,; and Matt and Leanne deserve a mention because they brought so much that it will take some months to distribute.
