News
from Bruce Peru, NEWS OF PERU, hope for homeless children
Published in November 2003 to report our activities
and events of October.
Our
own live-in Doctor for a month. Tanya
Jackson, MD Pediactrics, has taken a month off from her practice in Salt
Lake City, Utah, to come tend to our street children.
As
she lives on campus, we set up a clinic right in the childrens' dining area.
So now whenever children come to eat they also visit the doctor.

Our
consultants, professionals, project managers and international volunteers
accomplished lots this month
.
In
October we received more new international staff than ever, and they are
all working well; some on our existing projects, some on new ones. Construction
of the Delicias shelter progresses, as does the Arriba Ya pilot project
(for getting child laborers into education), and there is new direction
in the classes we offer to street children. The number of children who
come for free meals, medicine and classes is running at around 80 per
day, by late December this number will swell to 200 to 300 per day.

"Begin where
you are with what you have."
This
was the guiding philosophy of the scientist, George Washington Carver,
who discovered everything we know today about the useful humble peanut.
The
magnitude of his accomplishment can be measured by the fact that he
did it as a black man in the United States during the 19th century.
We at Bruce Peru are following this philosophy.
'So we don't have the money right now to build the Delicias Shelter
in noble materials', so we will begin construction using adobe. Watch
this space, you will see that before very long we will begin to give
shelter and real help to abandoned, pregnant adolescent rape victims:
and when we do we will be the only institution in the north of Peru
where these girls can find help.
|
We purchased tonnes and tonnes of old
adobe bricks in order to make new
bricks to build as much as we can until
someone comes forward with a donation
that will permit us to build the expensive parts..

This
months birthday celebration was bigger and wilder than ever.
Thanks to Antonio's body painting art, Jeannette's generosity and the
playful participation of all our staff
present the children - both those who
celebrated their birthdays and those who came to celebrate with them seemed
to have more fun than ever. With dancing,
games, prizes, competitions, cake and lots of sweets plus presents, balloons
and the inevitable piñata, the children went home tired and happy.

The
Angels of October:
This
month nearly all our new arrivals came bearing gifts - some heavily laden;
For instance Matt and Lianne arrived from Britain loaded with two laptop
computers and about a hundred kilos of high fashion clothes for all ages
of our children, babys to teens; Jessica from Australia with art supplies
(which she quickly put to use teaching the kids to make masks etc.); Dr.
Tanya and Megrann from the US with calssroom and art supplies. Jeannette
hosted the children's birthday party with a gift from The Drones Club,
from her home in the UK. On behalf of the children, thank you all very
much.

Thanks
to one last gift from Laure - our children are now brushing after meals.
Each has his or her own brush and each day someone supervises
while they brusha, brusha, brusha. |

This
little crew prepares 5,300 meals a month.
About half are free meals to street children, the rest are below cost menus
to the city's poor. |
