The Delicias Project for At-Risk Pregnant Teens
June 2005 update

On 22 June we held a concert at Bruce Peru, classical and popular guitar music, for our girls.

In Peru it is not uncommon for women to raise 5 or more children, each with a different biological father. What is also common is for the mother’s latest companion to rape the eldest daughters, often resulting in pregnancy. One expects a reaction from the mother, but not the sort of reaction which, sadly, is all too common here. As a result of the rape the mother feels shamed and jealous and pushes her own daughter, who is often without the comfort of additonal family members for support and understanding, out of the house. These abandoned, pregnant, adolescent rape victims (‘adolescents’), often only thirteen or fourteen years old face a dull future. They are without money; support; homes and job prospects. Most worrying of all, they are carrying an unborn baby, who will enter a world where education will not be available to them and their options for a self-sustainable life non-existent. It is not uncommon for such desperate girls to drift into prostitution and drugs; further blighting their lives and potential to contribute to society
Day out at the Mirador - the girls had a wonderful time!
On 18 June, Marta, as a going away present to her precious girls, invited them all to a local beauty spot for a meal and dancing. The volunteers assisted, especially Erica.
We constantly support them with the help of our Psychologist, social worker, staff and loving volunteers who have come particularly to work with them.
Some of the girls, pictured with some of our staff who direct the programme for them.Marta and Erica with legs crossed. There are 22 - 24 now.

We teach them basic skills plus how to read and write (for those who are illiterate).

We help them learn to market the things they have made - here are some examples of products made by our girls while they are waiting for their babies to arrive. Not pictures here are all the baby clothes they have made, which are not for sale.
Our mission: To save as many of these girls and their unborn children as we can, to prepare them for and steer them into a richer more productive life than they would have known without this project.
