Getting from Lima to Bruce Peru (Hotel/Bus)
1 - Reserve a taxi to meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. We use a safe and reliable taxi - his name is Leonardo Moya. Leonardo will be waiting for you with your name on a sign when you come out of customs. Make your reservation directly with him via email: leitomovil@hotmail.com: Give him your name, say you are a Bruce Peru volunteer, give him your arrival date, time and flight number. He will charge S/40 to S/50 (roughly US$12-$15, depending on how long he has to wait for your flight to arrive - this driver only goes to the airport to collect our volunteers) to meet you and take you to your hotel.
If your arrival in Lima is in the morning, then Leonardo can help you reserve and get you on a bus bound for Huaraz that very day.
If, however, your arrival is late at night - the next day the hotel staff or Leonardo can make your bus reservations, and Leonardo can take you to the terminal in time to pay for your ticked and board the bus.
Reserving a seat on the bus from Lima to Huaraz.
Either ask Leonardo to do this for you when he picks you up at Lima airport, or when checking in at your hotel be certain (immediately after checking in) to ask the hotel staff to reserve your seat on either the 'MOVIL TOUR' or 'LA LINEA' bus for Huaraz (presumably for the next day) - this can only be done once you are in Lima (because buses in Peru require payment within 24 hours).
NOTE: If you take a taxi, just any taxi from the airport, DO NOT PAY THE TAXI UNTIL YOU ARE INSIDE YOUR HOTEL, AND DO IT IN FRONT OF THE HOTEL STAFF, MAKING CERTAIN THEY ARE PART OF YOUR CONVERSATION WITH THE TAXI DRIVER!! - the price for a tax waiting in line at the airport should be roughly $14 (45 Soles, local money) - a volunteer who came in August 2004 and did not understand the local money, got into a taxi waiting in the line at the airport, outside the hotel he made her pay the equivolent of $175 If she had paid the driver in the hotel the staff would never have let the driver get away with this. Be aware that most crime against foreigners in Lima begins with the taxi driver.
2 - (assuming you will spend the first night in Lima - because most international flights arrive too late to catch a bus to Huaraz until the next day) Reserve a hotel room for the night. Below are two hotels in the best and safest part of town, which give our volunteers a discount. Make your reservation via email.
3 - The morning after you arrive in Lima and have your bus reservation, please call us at one of these numbers: (043) 427487 or <backup number>(044) 9924445 so we can have someone meet you at the terminal in Huaraz.
