Here is a typical medical
elective consisting of a doctor and nurse from the US and a student doctor
and two student technical assistants from Spain, plus two Peruvian medical
assistants. Together they saw between 80 and 140 patients each day. They
were able to treat many of these, prescribe medicines and refer others
for local treatment. They saved one life (a near death diabetic who was
unaware he had the disease). Result - As with all electives they got plenty
of practice and did much good for those they helped.
