Anyone who is positive, works well with others, has something to contribute and possesses a natural affection for the people we are trying to help (poor children and abandoned mothers). Age, sex, race, religion and national origin make no difference.
Types of work
done by our volunteers in Peru
Project coordinators, language teachers (especially English and French), social workers, psychiatrists, construction and maintenance, child minding, food service, teaching: PC, internet, arts and crafts, music, basic education; medical, project development, children's rights, psychology, child and mothers' advocacy, pure water and basic shelter. Right now we urgently need (in addition to teachers, social workers, child minders and psychologists), volunteers with administration fundraising and public relations skills. Our most urgent need remains project coordinators..
Room, Board and privileges
for International Volunteers in Peru

.
Volunteer Housing
We offer our international volunteers lodging on our campus*, three meals five days a week (Week ends, holidays and days when we are not feeding children not included), basic medical care (subject to availability of our volunteer doctors; cost of medicine, clinics, specialists and hospital care not included - though we do have some free medicines), *All International volunteers must live on campus or in approved accommodation (some long term volunteers have the option of living in an apartment off-campus). It is assumed that all volunteers who come to us pursuant to this application have come to work in our programs and projects, and not to take outside work or assignments - a practice which is forbidden.

.....Cost of Volunteering in Peru

There is no cost to register as a volunteer with us. All volunteers pay a fee in the amount of $290 per month. This is used for development, including recruitment and opening new projects and has no relationship to room and board, which are free. This amount must be paid in advance. We are self sustaining, are all volunteers and do not rely on government or institutional support. Note: We approve a little more than half of the serious applications we receive. However, we have evaluated and approved a considerable number of applications for volunteers who have fail to turn up. For this reason we now require that if your arrival date is more than one month after the time your application is approved you must reconfirm from time to time your continued intention to come, in order for your place to remain reserved. At least two weeks before you arrive you must email us confirming your arrival date and travel arrangements, and your contribution must have been received (the maximum prepayment required for long-term volunteers is the first three months contribution). There are no refunds.
* If this amount is difficult for you: here are some suggestions on getting Sponsored.

A typical day in the life of a volunteer
Photos of volunteer life in Peru

First breakfast here at our center. The volunteer then does one of the following: 1 - teaches a class to our regular children, 2 - if they are responsible for an area of our program (such as coordinating class schedules), they work in their area, 3 - they go to the parks and principal intersections in the city center to meet Street Children and child laborers who come in from the barrios to sell sweets, shine shoes, wash cars, beg or steal. The volunteer befriends them: invites them to come eat with us for free. Also, if the children have medical or dental problems (as practically all have), informs them where and when we offer free medical and dental services. At lunchtime receives the children invited in the morning and introduces them to other volunteers, the social worker, psychologist and if necessary to the doctor or dentist as well as to other children. 4 - Volunteers work in rotation in receiving, serving, monitoring and socializing with the children who participate in the free lunch program. Volunteers eat lunch with the children and/or with the other volunteers; after which there is free time or a bit of play with children who are not in our classes or in regular school in the afternoon. Some volunteers will then teach a course in the afternoon session or else work on a special project with the children (ie this may be painting a mural, planting a garden or working on a musical/theatrical show). In the late afternoon the volunteer either relaxes or works on development projects either in the office or in the field. The day ends for some with the night meal, 6:00 PM, those who are able teach language courses (mostly to young adults and people of low means) until 8:00 or 9:00 PM. The students of these courses pay a small donation for their lessons, and this helps fund our program for the children.
Present and past volunteers at
Bruce Peru
we normally have between 15 and 30 International Volunteers and 10 to 15 Peruvian volunteers serving at any given time
(in spite of the large number of volunteers who have served in our programs, we remain a small organization).
In fact we are all volunteers; doctors, dentists, three economists, lots of social workers, even more university students (medicine, systems, education, psychology, communication, architecture), cooks, lots and lots of teachers, child minders, psychologists, attorneys, engineers, a biologist, nurses, musicians, artists and laborers. The shortest time anyone has volunteered is one day; the longest so far is two years. The list below includes former and current volunteers.
